Employability through enterprise
In South Africa, unemployment and income inequality are very high. In a population of about 55 million, 7.5 million people are jobless. South Africa’s economy creates too few jobs to keep up with its growing population, and many young people lack the skills, work-related capabilities and higher education qualifications required to land high-skill jobs. About half of all 18- to 25-year-olds are jobless, which fuels poverty and other social ills.
An influx of migrant workers from remote parts of South Africa, especially the Eastern Cape, to fragile towns on the Western Cape such as Overstrand puts pressure on already limited infrastructure, opportunities and resources. The geographical remoteness of these towns and surrounding communities and the lack of a public transport system make it difficult for youth to access skills training, further education or employment.
To support the growth of small businesses that create job opportunities, young people need more help choosing which subjects to study, career guidance and training in the skills required to be an entrepreneur. Located in Overstrand, the Grootbos Foundation’s Siyakhula Careers, Employability and Entrepreneurship programme offers young South Africans a path to financial and economic freedom. It combines business-related skills development and career guidance with a sports programme to build self-confidence and a positive outlook.
This extension of our collaboration with the Grootbos Foundation enabled the organisation to continue running the Siyakhula (which means “It is growing” in Isa Xhosa) programme in 2018 and 2019. In those two years, the programme provided skills development opportunities and resources to 5 933 young people who were in school but at risk of dropping out, offering career and employability workshops and enterprise skills training to help them become more employable and self-confident. The programme also attracted 2 000 young people to its sports programmes and facilities.
