Providing food security in time of COVID-19

In April 2020 Swiss Re Group announced it was providing the Swiss Re Foundation with an additional CHF 5 million to fund COVID-19 relief efforts. Since then, the Swiss Re Foundation has been in contact with its local and global partners to assess the business impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

We're happy to report back on how funds are being used and how we're making a collective impact.

Providing food security in time of COVID-19

For several years, Swiss Re employees have elected food banks as their Charity of the Year (COTY) with the aim  of providing healthy food to their communities. Due to the pandemic, people face severe food insecurity and access to food is even more crucial. Based on our existing collaboration with the food banks, we were able to quickly pay out COVID-19 emergency relief funds, in addition to the usual  COTY grants, employee donations and matching funds. We have supported the following food banks in North America with over USD 450,000 in 2020:

Atlanta Community Food Bank, Atlanta, GA, USA
City Harvest, New York, NY, USA
Community Harvest Food Bank of N.I., Fort Wayne, IN, USA
Daily Bread Food Bank, Toronto, Canada
Feeding South Florida, Pembroke Park, FL, USA
Feeding Westchester, Elmsford, NY, USA
Food Share Ventura County, Oxnard, CA, USA
Foodshare, Bloomfield, CT, USA
Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago, IL, USA

One of the recipients, Feeding Westchester in Elmsford/NY, informed us that the pandemic brought many new challenges to the way they distribute food and how neighbors in need access that food. But thanks to their hardworking staff, selfless volunteers, National Guard, community supporters, tireless agency partners and generous donors, our food bank partners found solutions and fed hungry neighbors in need.

Matt Honeycutt, Vice President of Development, Feeding Westchester, stated: “This generous grant from Swiss Re Foundation will help us fund critical programs to feed children this summer. Before the crisis, about 60,000 kids in Westchester County had no idea where their next meal would come from. Many of these children and their families relied on school lunch programs, school pantries and Feeding Westchester’s Kids Backpack program to get food in their bellies. But with school and camp closures, that need has grown by at least 40% and we are coming up with new ways to make sure no child in Westchester County goes hungry”.

"When COVID-19 hit Toronto and economic uncertainty shook the city, Swiss Re Foundation was quick to reach out and support Daily Bread's pandemic response efforts", said Neil Hetherington, The Daily Bread Food Bank's Chief Executive Officer. He continued: "To give you a sense of that impact, the Swiss Re Foundation's generous donation enabled us to distribute food for over 93,000 complete meals."
