South Korean charity Happy Giver to distribute COVID-19 care packages

In April Swiss Re Group announced it was providing the Swiss Re Foundation with an additional CHF 5 million to fund COVID-19 relief efforts. Over the last two months, the Swiss Re Foundation has been in contact with its local and global partners to assess the business impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

We're happy to report back on how funds are being used and how we're making a collective impact. Here is one of the stories.

Swiss Re Foundation partners with South Korean charity Happy Giver to distribute COVID-19 care packages to single mother families

The South Korean city of Daegu, which is the fourth largest city in South Korea endured the first large coronavirus outbreak outside of China, reporting a total of 6807 cases since the outbreak started there in late February; this comes up to more than half of all infections in South Korea. With so many lives impacted by the pandemic, Swiss Re Korea decided to engage with the local non-profit organisation, Happy Giver to provide a COVID-19 response to the vulnerable communities of Daegu.

With the support of the Swiss Re Foundation, our Swiss Re Korea colleagues collaborated with Happy Giver for a COVID-19 response project called "Baby Box for Single Moms to Be." This collaboration consisted of relief/care-packages filled with baby clothes, masks, hand soap, powered formula, and baby tissues. Swiss Re employees and their family members in Korea helped to make some care items, such as hand soap, masks, and new-born baby clothes for the baby boxes that were then delivered directly to the single mothers' homes across Daegu.

The Swiss Re Foundation provided the resources and opportunity to extend the support needed to these single mothers and their children during these uncertain times. Partnering with Happy Giver has shown that despite a pandemic and time of uncertainty, people can still support one another. In addition to supporting Happy Giver's COVID-19 response project, they will also be Swiss Re Korea's 'Charity of the Year' to further engage both Swiss Re employees and the greater community in South Korea.

Happy Giver is a non-profit organisation, helping low-income communities, disabled, juvenile and single mothers across South Korea. Happy Giver seeks to provide a safe space and environment in which these vulnerable communities can continue to strive regardless of their societal circumstances.

"It was pleasing for us to think how many employees of Swiss Re are willing to provide their support during a difficult time," said SunHa Park, Administrative Assistant of Happy Giver.  "Thank you, all of you at Swiss Re Korea."
