Rebuilding Fiji after Cyclone Winston
In a nutshell
Cyclone Winston was the strongest tropical cyclone ever to hit Fiji. After making landfall on 20 February 2016, it wiped out homes, flooded rivers and brought down trees and power lines across the country. According to the Red Cross, 44 people died and more than 32 000 homes were damaged or destroyed. The storm left behind extensive damage to crops and markets across the country and hundreds of thousands of people in need of safe water and sanitation facilities.
Swiss Re's Australian business worked with the Australian Red Cross to raise urgently needed funds for disaster relief. With support from the Swiss Re Foundation, the local Swiss Re team collected around AUD 60 000 from staff, family and industry contacts. These generous donations continue to help families in Fiji recover from and rebuild in the wake of the cyclone.
