Earth Security: Catalysing a Global Pipeline of Nature-based Solutions for Coastal Resilience

Coastal nature-based solutions (NBS) capture carbon while building coastal resilience yet remain chronically underfunded. Mangrove forests, for example, are carbon powerhouses that protect coastlines from storms and floods, sustain ocean biodiversity, and underpin food security and livelihoods for millions of people. Where mangroves have been lost, fish stocks have collapsed, erosion has accelerated, and coastal communities are increasingly exposed to extreme weather. 

Despite their value, coastal NBS projects struggle to attract investment. Community-based blue carbon initiatives require more early-stage financing than terrestrial projects to ensure robust science, community engagement, and long-term governance. This dependence on catalytic capital and philanthropy has created a financing bottleneck: only a small fraction of projects advances beyond feasibility to investment readiness. 

The challenge, therefore, is not only to aggregate a global pipeline of projects, but also to mobilise the right blend of early-stage and corporate capital that recognises the full value of resilience. 

Earth Security tackles this challenge by acting on both sides of the investment equation: It builds a robust pipeline of investable coastal NBS projects while identifying and mobilising corporate and financial capital to unlock their development. It positions projects where blue carbon, coastal risk reduction, and local community impact create a combined return on investment - a Resilience ROI.

The initiative drives impact by:  

• Curating a global portfolio of high-quality blue carbon and coastal resilience projects. 
• Convening companies, foundations, impact investors, and carbon funds to develop new funding partnerships. 
• Integrating insurance and risk-reduction instruments to unlock private capital. 
• Establishing transparent data and impact metrics to build investor confidence in NBS for coastal resilience. 

Earth Security’s coastal nature-based resilience programme mobilises over 200 companies, investors and philanthropists through a curated pipeline of 50 coastal NBS projects. It facilitates investment partnerships, that can deliver combined blue carbon, coastal resilience, and community value - in what it calls Resilience ROI - and proves that nature-based solutions can deliver measurable resilience dividends that benefit both businesses and society.
