Project timeline
When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in November 2013, it destroyed up to 90% of homes and infrastructure in the hardest-hit areas, leaving many survivors extremely vulnerable. Around 4 million people were displaced and in desperate need of food, water and shelter.
The Swiss Re Foundation immediately gave CHF 250 000 to the Swiss Red Cross for relief efforts, which provided storm survivors with 213 tropical tents, 200 family tents and 448 shelter kits. The Foundation also launched a Group-wide Swiss Re employee donation drive to support Save the Children, which had operational and field bases as well as support teams in the three worst-hit areas on Leyte and Panay Islands.
This global appeal met with a great response from Swiss Re employees, whose total contribution of CHF 124 315 the Foundation matched. The combined funds were used to provide some of the most vulnerable families affected by the typhoon with access to emergency shelter, safe water, food and healthcare and to help children continue attending school.
