The challenge
In Indonesia and across Southeast Asia, retail pharmacies are often the most accessible healthcare providers. However, many operate independently with fragmented procurement systems, limited bargaining power and inconsistent access to affordable, quality-assured medicines.
Stock inefficiencies, working capital constraints and weak digital integration reduce supply reliability. At the same time, pharmacies are increasingly expected to play a role in preventive care and chronic disease management, yet often lack structured systems, clinical support and patient data tools.
These limitations particularly affect lower-income communities that rely on local pharmacies as their primary source of healthcare advice and medicines.
The approach
SwipeRx is a Southeast Asia–focused health technology company that digitally connects pharmacies, pharmacists and pharmaceutical manufacturers through an integrated mobile platform.
It operates the region’s largest digital pharmacy network, connecting over 300,000 pharmacy professionals across 50,000 pharmacies. Through its Community platform, SwipeRx provides accredited professional education, pharmacy-specific news, and peer exchange. Through SwipeRx Commerce, its digital Group Purchasing Organization (GPO), it centralizes procurement, negotiates directly with manufacturers, and strengthens last-mile supply chain capabilities to improve product availability and affordability.
Building on these digital infrastructure and distribution capabilities, SwipeRx has launched Apotek Inofarma, a women-led, low-cost pharmacy chain designed to serve underserved communities while ensuring high product availability and competitive pricing.
Through this combination of digital procurement, professional upskilling, and retail pharmacy operations, SwipeRx aims to modernize pharmacy networks and strengthen their role within national health systems.
Goals and expected impact
The project focuses on developing and scaling the Apotek Inofarma Services+ model, expanding the role of pharmacies from medicine dispensing points to structured, digitally enabled primary care access points.
The project aims to:
-
Increase uptake of low-cost preventive health screenings at pharmacy level
-
Enable structured access to physician consultations for patients screened positive
-
Introduce a simple “mini health record” integrated into the pharmacy system to support longitudinal patient tracking
-
Explore and implement insurance integration pathways to improve affordability and reimbursement for community-based services
By strengthening screening, referral, digital tracking and financing mechanisms, the project aims to improve early detection of non-communicable diseases, enhance continuity of care, and demonstrate a commercially viable, scalable pharmacy-based primary care model for low- and middle-income communities in Indonesia.
